Case Study -
Teamwork
Doreen McKenzie, Managing Director of Knock Travel, was the first female participant on Excelus in 2001. Doreen had felt that as Knock Travel was her own business, her role was to be involved in every level of activity within the company. Although initially reluctant to relinquish this control, Doreen learned much during the Excelus workshops from her business peers, who were from a diverse range of industries, including a fruit processing business, an environmental business, and a lift manufacturer.
Although from different backgrounds, Doreen was inspired by the challenge of the ideas and experiences they presented, which put into context one of the key themes of Excelus – learning to let others lead. Since the course, Doreen has put a cohesive management team into place, and she has not only more time to spend on company strategy, but on her various prestigious roles within the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA).
Knock Travel now has three branches, including a newly refurbished flagship in Ballyhackamore, and is striving to capture the market in speciality bespoke holidays and business packages. In 2003, Knock Travel was the Northern Ireland regional winner of the British Small Business Champions Award.
Doreen continues to meet with her former Excelus graduates, and mentors at the Excelus Network Club, and says; “As a consequence of Excelus the business continues to prosper. Sales are up and so is profitability. New products have been developed and we have sought and gained business from customer types not previously dealt with.”
