Case Study - Delegation

Rodney Lowry of Image Technical Services Ltd, Carryduff, which has expanded rapidly to become one of Ireland’s leading building services providers. These services are in four distinct categories: complete building maintenance services, incorporating all electrical, mechanical and building fabric; electrical and mechanical services to new buildings; shop fitting and small fabric installations; and corporate rebranding and signage installations.

As the marketplace changed, the company found that they were able to develop the necessary skills and experience to undertake work involving tailored solutions and major contracts. However, around the same time, issues were arising within the company in terms of coordination and optimisation of staff.

Rodney found that he was spending most of his time managing the day to day affairs of the business, and not overseeing its longer term direction and development. On the advice of a leading business adviser, Rodney decided to enrol on the Excelus programme. Excelus helped Rodney to realise the importance of managing change in a marketplace that is continuously evolving.
As the nature of the company’s work changed, it had to adapt the way in which it approached it, and Rodney had to lead this process. A review of organisational arrangements, including management structure, resources and staff, was undertaken, and as a result Image has implemented a number of changes which, in today’s environment, leaves it well placed to service the needs of discriminating and demanding blue chip customers.

Reflecting on his experience Rodney commented; “The transition has not been easy – but I do know that what we are doing is a move in the right direction. In the past I was always hands on and involved in everything! I now know that I must stand back and allow my fellow Directors to run day to day affairs. My role is different; the changes we have implemented have given me the time I need to spend time with customers and to explore the other interesting and exciting business opportunities which we have identified”.
